Tall Door Installation for Boats and RVs

When You Genuinely Need a Taller Opening

There is only one situation that calls for this job: the rig will not physically pass through the hole. Not the open door, not the rail, the hole itself. If your boat is nine feet two and your opening is seven feet, no amount of clever track work fixes that. The header has to come up.

That is worth being blunt about, because a re-headered opening is the expensive route and it gets sold to people who did not need it.

What Heights Are Available

Sectional doors come in one foot increments above the standard seven, so eight, nine, ten, and twelve are all stock sizes from most manufacturers. Fourteen and sixteen exist but are usually commercial lines.

Rough guidance from the driveways around here:

The Framing Is the Real Job

Raising an opening means cutting the wall above it and building a new header. On a single storey garage with a simple truss roof that is straightforward. On a two storey house with living space over the garage, the header is carrying floor load and the sizing is an engineering question, not a preference. The City of Huntington Beach will want a permit for structural work, and you want one too, because this is the kind of thing a buyer’s inspector notices.

Practical constraints we run into constantly:

Weight Changes Everything Behind the Door

This is the part that surprises people. A door is roughly its area in panel weight, so a sixteen by ten door is about forty percent heavier than the sixteen by seven it replaced. Add insulation and you are heavier again.

That flows straight through the system:

How the Visit Goes

  1. Measure the opening, the headroom, the backroom, and the lowest obstruction on the ceiling.
  2. Measure your vehicle at its tallest fixed point, on its trailer, on level ground.
  3. Confirm whether the header is structural and whether a permit and a drawing are needed.
  4. Frame, install, spring to the finished weight, and set the drums.
  5. Balance test by hand at waist height, then run both UL 325 safety reversal tests and reset the photo eyes within six inches of the floor.

Two Honest Warnings

Check your driveway slope before you commit. A driveway that rises toward the garage eats clearance you thought you had, and a driveway that falls away can put the trailer tongue on the concrete.

And check that the taller door has somewhere to go. We have measured plenty of garages where the opening could be raised but the open door would then sit exactly where the ceiling storage rack is. Clearing that out is part of the budget.
